Advice For New Users

A Cookie is a small piece of text that can be stored in your web browser.

When an HTML page is rendered in your web browser, before the main content there can be lines specifying small pieces of text. These are reasonably arbitrary, and so the server can store information on the user's web browser.

When a web browser then make a request for a URL from a web server, appropriate cookies are made available back to the web server. In this way a web server can "remember" earlier interactions with this user.

This allows servers to retain shopping carts, login details, and other items necessary for complex and extended interactions with the user.
