A Web Server is a piece of software that runs somewhere "out there" (or possibly on your machine).

The Web Server receives requests from a Web Browser (or other software) and services those requests

It used to be that these requests were for documents or static pages, but increasingly web content has become dynamic. Hence the proliferation of libraries, frameworks, etc.
