The operating system (OS) provides (at least!) the following services:

• access to hardware resources like memory and disk
• low-level networking
• process management:
• loading your programs off the disk,
• starting and stopping them, and
• stopping them from stomping on each other's resources
• a filesystem:
• representing the files and folders that you (and your programs) see into a pattern of 1s and 0s on your hard disk's platters or your SSD's chips.
